"My time in Oxford is not just a memory I will cherish, but a time of formation that grew me as a person."
— Elisha Colby, English & Intercultural Studies, '17
Travel & Learn
How can you travel to exciting locations and get academic credit at the same time? Study abroad! Increase your emotional intelligence, engage with people from other cultures, and increase your future marketability to an employer … all while taking in the beauty of a completely different part of the world.
“Studying abroad challenged everything I thought I knew about cross-cultural relationships. The professionals that I had the honor of working with are some of the most beautiful examples of Christ’s love I have ever met.”
— Delaina Peek, Social Work, ’17
Why Study Abroad?
GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
Using skills in the “real world” shows you firsthand what it will be like to work in your chosen profession, or can help you choose what you’d like that profession to be.
ACHIEVE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Studying abroad ignites a drive for success. In fact, most SEU students achieve higher GPAs when they return from their trip than they had when they left.
GROW CONFIDENCE IN YOUR FIELD
Some students who were undecided before their trip find their true calling during their time abroad. Or, completing an internship abroad shows you how you could be using your degree in a different setting.
Living in another country requires flexibility, adaptability and tenacity. These skills develop as you are placed in an environment completely unlike your home not just to visit but to accomplish something.
SPEND SOME TIME
Depending on the trip destination, the coursework, the area of study and the level of learning (undergraduate or graduate), trips vary in length from one week to a full semester ... or even an entire school year!
Many of our trips are completely organized and run by SEU faculty, so you’ll travel with other SEU students. If you choose a partner program, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other Christian students from across the U.S.
FURTHER YOUR EDUCATION
An impressive 90% of students who study abroad are admitted to their first or second choice graduate school.
GRADUATE ON TIME
You’ll never fall behind on your studies because of study abroad; trips are designed to keep you on-track for graduation.
INCREASE YOUR EMPLOYABILITY
Due to the diverse knowledge gained from international travel, students with study abroad experience are more marketable to potential employers. Study abroad alumni are twice as likely to get a job they love after graduation.
GET FINANCIAL AID
In most cases, students can use their tuition money (financial aid/scholarships/loans/etc.) toward their time abroad, and then pay their additional travel-related expenses (such as flight, work visas, etc.).
The type(s) of academic credit you can earn varies based on your major, chosen trip and location, but can include course credit, internship/practicum hours, or even completing an academic minor.
GROW YOUR FAITH
We only partner with onsite programs that are faith-based, or offer programs planned by our faculty, who of course continue to fully integrate Christian academics.
“Studying abroad challenges you to the very edge of what you know and shows you how to keep walking … trusting that God is with you.”
