5 Must-Have Items for Enjoying Florida This Spring
With spring break just around the corner for high school and college students, many are already envisioning how they’ll spend this much-needed vacation, from sleeping in to laying on the beach to taking a cross-country trip with friends. One destination that’s consistently a favorite among spring breakers is Florida. Home to year-round sunny weather, some of the nation’s top beaches and popular theme parks such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, it’s no wonder why. For those planning on spending their week in the Sunshine State, here are five must-have items for enjoying Florida this spring.
Whether biking the entire Florida peninsula or just cruising around one of the many charming downtown areas, a bike can help you get where you want to go while still allowing you to take in the scenery. If you don’t own a bike and aren’t ready to make the investment, many towns offer bike share programs, allowing locals and visitors alike to rent bicycles for a reasonable hourly fee.
2. Insulated thermos
An insulated thermos will ensure that you always have plenty of cold water on hand, especially when spending time outdoors in the Florida heat. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least one-third of your body weight in water each day (for example, 50 oz. if you weigh 150 pounds).
With well over 200 days of sunshine each year in Florida, you’ll want to invest in a quality pair of shades, complete with UV protection. They’re not only a fun fashion accessory but also an important component in keeping your eyes healthy, no matter where you live or visit.
4. Map of Florida
Bringing a map along as you’re exploring, whether the one on your smartphone or even the old-fashioned paper kind, will come in handy for finding all of Florida’s state parks and famous landmarks, such as Circle B Bar Reserve, just 10 minutes from Southeastern’s campus, or Cape Canaveral on the east coast, the base of the U.S. space program.
Though it can be tempting to fit in as many activities as possible when you’re on vacation, especially if it’s somewhere you haven’t been before, be sure to take some time to truly relax as well. After a long day of sightseeing, biking, sandcastle building and whatever else is on your Florida getaway to-do list, find yourself a nice, shady spot and kick back for a while in a portable hammock.
