16-Month MAML Program at SEU

As a Christ-centered university, it’s natural that the very first master’s degree that SEU offered was the Master of Arts in Ministerial Leadership, often referred to as the MAML.

Over time, the MAML evolved to be offered in three learning formats: executive cohort, traditional classroom or online.

Remaking the MAML

“To ensure that our programs remain relevant to today’s churches, we are always looking to innovate how they are offered,” explained Dr. Alan Ehler, dean of the Barnett College of Ministry & Theology. “The MAML remains the most cherished graduate degree by our religion students, so making changes to the executive cohort offering was essential to its continued success.”

Reimagining the cohort meant consulting with faculty, current students and graduates of the program for ideas. SEU’s MAML graduates have included active pastors of churches of all sizes (including some of America’s largest), pastoral staff, parachurch ministry leaders and denominational officials, so feedback on their experiences was very valuable.

“Ultimately, the driver of this redesigned program is to minimize travel for our students without compromising the cohort experience,” explained Ehler. “Ministers and church leaders need to be available to their ministries. This format allows them to remain engaged in active ministry and directly apply what they’re learning as they earn their degree.”

Connecting to Campus

The updated cohort model offers one-week intensives, mostly held at SEU’s Lakeland campus, with guest speakers and guest faculty that are brought in to teach. Online reading and writing assignments will supplement students’ learning before and after each in-person experience.

“We’re confident that our MAML executive cohort students will love the connectivity they feel to SEU from their time on campus,” Ehler added. “Spending time on campus is already finding great success with our new Doctor of Ministry degree cohort so we believe the same will hold true with the MAML.”

16 Month MAML — A Fast Track for Success

This program will allow students to complete the MAML degree in just 16 months.* This innovative format will also give students the opportunity to:

  • Learn from nationally-known guest faculty and SEU’s renowned residential faculty.
  • Spend time with some of America’s premier ministry thinkers and leaders.
  • Benefit from the camaraderie of cohort members by supporting each other in their educational journey and in their active ministry.
  • Attend the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta and a spiritual retreat.

“From the classroom to the community, SEU strives to serve our students in the most effective, efficient way possible,” said Ehler. “This redesigned cohort will do just that.”

Most of these sessions are two-class intensives with guests on Wednesdays.

Students who are interested in this program are invited to apply now. Please contact our Office of Admission with any questions. Admission space for each cohort will be limited in order to ensure the best experience.

* While the executive cohort will allow program completion in 16 months, the MAML degree will continue to be available completely online and in traditional classroom format. These formats generally allow students to complete the MAML degree in approximately two years.
