Alex Nilius (Class of 2018)

My name is Alex (Hewson) Nilius. I was a Kinesiology/Exercise Science major from the class of 2018. My husband, Josh, and I now reside in my hometown of Raleigh, NC and we are expecting our first child in October of 2020. I just finished my MS in Biomechanics from the University of Illinois at Chicago in May 2020, and I’m currently applying to PhD programs. My time at SEU fostered a love of research due to how highly individualized the program is. I had the opportunity to learn and write about the aspects of the field that I found most interesting. For me, that was adaptive sports and recreation, which led me to study strength in lower limb amputees in graduate school. My favorite memory from Southeastern was serving on the Health & Wellness team to produce events designed to help students at SEU stay active and healthy. I taught a bootcamp fitness class on campus my junior year and also volunteered with the P.E classes at Pathways School of Excellence.

Carla Pesce (Class of 2000)

I graduated SEU in the spring of 2000. My major was elementary education. I currently reside in Askewville, NC with my husband, Dave, and our two children, David and Caelyn. I completed my master’s degree in 2015 with a focus in curriculum and instruction. This fall begins my eighteenth year in education. My time at Southeastern laid the foundation for my career because my professors at SEU showed me what I  needed to build on. The most important thing they taught me was to take Christ with me in my classroom no matter where I am placed. Mrs. Rowe told us on several occasions that students will not care what you know, until they know you care. If I had to build my teaching career on a philosophy, that would be it. The professors not only taught us that we needed to build relationships with our students, they demonstrated this through the classes that they taught. Some of my favorite memories from SEU are simply times spent with friends walking around a lake or just hanging out watching movies.
