Professor Robert Hartley joined Southeastern University in 2016 from the Polk County School District, bringing with him 39 years of experience in K–12 public education. He knows the public education system from many viewpoints, having served as a classroom teacher, coach, dean, assistant principal and principal at the school-based level. He has also served at the school board’s district office as the director of employee relations. Professor Hartley loves teaching at Southeastern, where he teaches all field study courses EDUC and ESED. He believes that a Christ-centered environment is extremely important in life and in the educational process at all levels.
He strives to instill a love of teaching in his students. He believes that teachers and coaches guide students through life as much as, or more than, any other profession. Throughout his life, education and athletics have been a passion for Professor Hartley. This focus, along with loving parents, has helped him overcome a lower socioeconomic upbringing.
Professor Hartley and his wife JoAnn have been married for more than 24 years and have four successful grown sons who have left the nest. They also have 10 loveable birds who are still with them in the nest.
