Biography

Dr. Joe Childs currently serves as the Chair of Business and Leadership and the Acting Director for the Center of Innovation. In these responsibilities he oversees the development and curricular design of the School of Unrestricted Education’s business and leadership, and various other certificate programs. He joined Southeastern University in the summer of 2008 as the Dean of the College of Business and Legal Studies and served in that capacity until July 1, 2015.

Prior to joining Southeastern University he was the Chair of the Business Management program at Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California. He also has held executive positions in the satellite telecommunications industry and other technology-oriented start-ups. He maintains a consulting practice and has worked on accounts for major corporations based in Silicon Valley, California, including Amge, Apple, Cisco, VMware, and Hitachi PC as well as mentoring entrepreneurs. From 1990 to 1993, he worked with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governments as a consultant in the former Soviet Union, Romania, Hungary, and Poland as they transitioned to market economies. Because of this work, Dr. Childs was awarded a Doctor of Honoris Causa from Agora University of Oradea in Romania.

Dr. Childs has served on the executive board of directors for the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, is the President-elect of Citrus Center Kiwanis, and a board member of Ignite Lakeland. He is appointed to the Lakeland City Utility Committee and the Florida 10th Circuit Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and running half-marathons.
