Professor Jim Paton brings his background in education and ministry to his classes at Southeastern University. During his career, he taught special needs high school students in the Polk County, served as an ordained minister in the local church, and practiced pastoral counseling. He came to faith while serving in the Air Force as pararescueman, a special operations medic. Since the beginning of his faith, Professor Paton has been interested in counseling, psychology, and Christian identity.  As a professor, Professor Paton is intentional about fusing faith and psychology as informed by psychological research, God’s word, and the Spirit’s guidance and counsel.

Southeastern University recognized Professor Paton’s passion for teaching and engaging students by awarding him the Most Outstanding Faculty award in 2013 and the Faculty Advising Award in 2017.

Professor Paton’s passion for psychology and faith spans international borders.  He has preached and taught on the relationship between cognition and the fruit of the Spirit on summer mission trips to Nicaragua and presented on child development to teachers at The Learning Center in Kona, Hawaii. He lived in Okinawa, Japan for over 4 years and has done short-term missions in Thailand and India. He teaches undergraduate Psychology courses.
