  NEWS AT SOUTHEASTERN

Notice of Programs Discontinuation

The University has done an evaluation of its academic programs in response to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education’s concerns regarding the span of academic programs in light of the small number of full-time faculty.  Programs with low enrollments, low numbers of graduates, inadequate resources, or rapidly declining enrollments were identified and assessed.  Effective immediately, no new students will be admitted to a program that is discontinued.

The Board of Trustees approved the discontinuation of the following programs at its June 2008 Board meeting:

AS Degrees:

  • Computer Science
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Government Management
  • Marketing
  • Non-profit Management.

BS Degrees:

  • Computer Science
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing

Master’s:

  • Computer Science

During the 18 month period beginning in September 2008, a market analysis will be conducted and a determination made as to whether the BS in Nonprofit Management program should be restructured or discontinued.  It is important to note that these changes are not reflected in the planned academic schedules for 2008-2010 that are posted online and that this updates the 2008-2010 catalog.

Students currently enrolled in these programs will be notified of their discontinuation and will be given all reasonable accommodations in order to allow them to complete their programs of study. For those choosing to continue in the discontinued degree program,. They will receive further information on moving through the courses as a cohort from the Dean’s Office. No new students will be admitted to discontinued programs.

If you have questions regarding these programs, please contact either Telaekah Brooks at tbrooks@seu.edu or (202) 478-8216 or Michael White, Senior Academic Advisor at mwhite@seu.edu or (202) 478-8227.

Property Management Graduate Honored Nationally as Mental Health Advocate

Washington, DC--Sharon Wise, a graduate of Southeastern University’s first Property Management Certificate Program, is one of five persons recognized as an outstanding mental health advocate and community leader with a 2008 Voice Consumer Leadership Award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Just days before her property management’s class graduation, Ms. Wise flew to Paramount Studios in Los Angeles in late May, where she was honored at a dinner ceremony, along with television and film writers, producers and actors who received Voice awards for creating “dignified and accurate depictions of people living with mental health problems.”

Sharon Wise, who experienced mental illness at an early age and after numerous hospitalizations, now serves as a model of recovery. Along with her property management studies and a Masters in Human Services (Psychology), she advocates for the mentally ill through conducting satisfaction surveys for the D.C. Department of Mental Health. She has coordinated mental health consumer forums that focused on voting rights, smoking prevention, housing, and mental health parity, and worked as a substance abuse and criminal justice guidance counselor. She teaches art and acting as creative outlets to achieve mental health recovery in both local programs and national conferences.

She describes the awards ceremony as Oscar-like complete with award-winning actors, a red carpet, reporters and paparazzi. One of the highlights for Ms. Wise was the after party just outside the studio gates, hosted by mental health advocate and actress Sally Field, who hugged her and declared, “You’re my hero!”

During her acceptance speech, Ms. Wise sited her experiences at Southeastern University as “more than a place of learning, but as a place that has given me the tools to forge alliances, secure bridges, build powerful networks and gain cultural competency.”

The Voice Awards are part of the Campaign for mental Health Recovery, a multi-year public service advertising program of SAMHSA and the Ad Council to promote understanding and support of young adults and others with mental illness.

April 25 - 26: VIP Ribbon Cutting on the Renovated New Wing and Community Open Houses

Washington, DC – Southeastern University’s north wing classroom improvements are completed and will be celebrated by an invitation-only VIP ribbon-cutting on the morning of Fri., April 25 and a Community Open House on Sat., April 26 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., announced Charlene Drew Jarvis, Southeastern University president.

The renovation of one of its north academic wings at 501 I St. at 6th St. in Southwest Washington, DC, includes four of the largest second floor classrooms and three break-out spaces throughout 5,300 square-feet. The renovations incorporate modern, leading-edge design elements as the standard for best-practices in the educational community. Classes commenced in the new rooms at the beginning of the spring quadmester on March 24.

“Southeastern is committed to preparing our students in the best possible environment for learning,” said Dr. Jarvis. “Our technologically-advanced wing has been designed to respond to the way students learn and change the way professors teach.”

The classrooms feature interactive Smartboard ™ technology. The touch-sensitive whiteboard allows control of computer applications from the display, writing notes in digital ink, and saving work to share later.

The project’s Capital Campaign Founding Donors include Fannie Mae, The Government of the District of Columbia, PEPCO, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Wachovia Foundation, and Zed’s Ethiopian Cuisine. Approximately $1 million has already been secured in federal funding for these capital improvements.

Project partners include the architectural firm Perkins + Will, Audio Video Systems, and furniture retailer Haworth. Not only does the current renovation of four of the largest classrooms and three break-out spaces incorporate the latest in technology, but it includes sustainable concepts, materials and products leading to a healthier environment and lower energy costs for Southeastern, according to Jarvis.

Specific sustainable features of the renovated space include the reuse of the existing building structure, double pane insulated window glazing, high radiant heat roof, more access to natural light, new recyclable carpets and backing, recyclable acoustical ceiling system, lounge furniture made from sustainable wood products with water based adhesives and wood stains yielding less Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) gasses, high light reflectance ceilings, low odor/VOC paint on metal and gypsum surfaces, a high efficient heating and cooling system, energy efficient long life fluorescent lamps with occupancy and time-out sensors, and water efficient toilets and urinals.

The Southeastern building, originally the Hawthorne School, built in 1963, is an example of urban renewal and mid-century modern architecture. It is part of the Southwest Urban Renewal area, designed and built as a prototype and held up as a model for all urban renewal projects, 1946-69.

Today, Southeastern University intends to affect change across the Washington, DC area, as a Southeastern education for the students is an investment not only in their success, but also in the empowerment of the communities in which they live and work. Their success positively impacts their communities as they start businesses, hire community members and act as role models for others.

Southeastern University's Center for Entrepreneurship Encourages Two Alumni to Launch their own Franchise

Washington, DC— Two alumni from Southeastern University’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and new franchise owners Fletcher and LaSonya White, credit the launch of their own business, The Little Gym of Clinton, Maryland, to the help and encouragement they received from their Washington, DC alma mater.. The doors of their new franchise, The Little Gym of Clinton at 8887 Woodyard Road, is slated to open on January 14.

The two parents became inspired by seeing their then 18-month-old son Fletcher Jr. gain confidence and develop social and cognitive skills through games and activities when he was enrolled in the Little Gym in Waldorf, Maryland in 2004 and 2005. Finding the programs rewarding and fun, they decided to open their own gym franchise to serve children, ages 4 months to 12 years, in southern Prince George’s County.

Fletcher White, a 235-pound former linebacker, is the fulltime gym director, and he will also train children. along with his wife LaSonya how to do cartwheels on the balance beam, flip on the parallel bars and do hand stands, just as they learned by attending The Little Gym's boot camp in Scottsdale, Arizona. He also plans to go out to the community and visit schools, daycare facilities and parent organizations to pitch the mantra of “motor skill development made fun builds confidence that leads to a lifetime of success.” While his wife LaSonya will keep her current job, she will also handle the financials and do some weekend training. In addition, the couple has hired seven coaches with backgrounds in gymnastics, cheerleading, and athletic management.

The enthusiasm of the new business owners is paired with their solid education and employment background. Mr. White received his Bachelor of Science in marketing and his Associate's degree in business management from Southeastern University, where he also sought help from and attended classes at the Center for Entrepreneurship. Mrs. White obtained a Master of Business Administration in financial management from Southeastern University in 2002, and has a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. With her 12 years of consulting experience, she works as an associate senior financial lead at Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, Virginia.

In recalling how the Center of Entrepreneurship helped him, Mr. White said, "The Center for Entrepreneurship has been a major resource of information for me both in class studies and in the real world.”

Mr. White continued: “I keep in touch with Professor Telaekah K. Brooks [Department Chair of Business Management and Public Administration and founder of the Center of Entrepreneurship] and consider her to be my Small Business and Professional Services subject matter resource. Through her I’ve found a Certified Public Accountant for my business and gained valuable knowledge in how Small Business Administration (SBA) loans are structured."

What first inspired the Whites to open a franchise of The Little Gym is also central to the gym's purpose. The Little Gym, which started in 1976, offers an ever-changing curriculum that compliments a child’s natural curiosity and classes that are infused with age appropriate music, activity, and skill development emphasizing physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development.

Southeastern also provided the Whites with another opportunity. When Southeastern’s President Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis heard about the Whites’ business venture with The Little Gym, she forwarded their names to IBM who offered them an opportunity to test for the IBM and the World Bank’s International Financial Corporation’s (IFC) Small and Medium Enterprise Toolkit, which offers online business tools and templates to help small businesses expand and grow. Impressed by Mr. White’s feedback about the tools, he was asked to be in IBM’s commercial and was interviewed by several local and national reporters.

Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis, President of Southeastern University, led her first meeting as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (the Consortium). Mayor Adrian Fenty, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, and to undertake more university-based green initiatives. Mayor Fenty, Governor O'Malley and Gover Kaine are attending the Board of Trade's Potomac Conference meeting on October 29 and 30 with the goal of developing a regional leadership agenda for the environment. Trinity University President Patricia McGuire is co-chairing the conference which will also feature presentations by University of Maryland President C.Dan Mote and George Mason University President Alan Merten.
