The majority of SEU students and faculty live and work in the Washington metropolitan area. The traditional SEU student is a working professional who is employed full or part time and seeks a college degree for professional advancement and personal enrichment. SEU provides a very personal educational environment where students enjoy a low student-teacher ratio in small classroom settings. The total student enrollment is 1000. Over 60% are female. Together, the students and faculty represent over 50 countries and cultures. The SEU faculty is composed of many professionals who are employed at high levels in the federal or local government or the private sector. Of the full time faculty, 67% have terminal degrees in their specialties.

Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis is the university president.
