Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), also referred to as a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT), combine an aptitude for science with the desire to help others. As skilled, laboratory professionals, MLTs are engaged in the collection, handling, processing and analysis of body fluids, cells and tissues through the application of chemical, biological and physical principles. Their role of providing laboratory information is essential for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases.
They may work in several areas of the clinical laboratory or specialize in just one, such as histology or phlebotomy. Usually working under the supervision of laboratory technologists or laboratory managers, many find positions beyond the traditional hospital environment in health departments, private laboratories, university research centers, forensics, environmental health agencies as well as product development and sales. There also is a growing trend for Medical Laboratory Technicians to perform wellness laboratory testing aimed at preventing disease.
