Department of Liberal Studies
Overview

The Liberal Studies Department which houses courses in humanities, Child Development, the social and natural sciences, English, and English as a Second Language provides Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Liberal Studies and Child Development. It also provides Associates of Arts in Child Development and Liberal Studies.

The Department provides required and general courses for Southeastern University. Its general courses seek to produce graduates who can communicate clearly, intelligently, and effectively, in both writing and speaking in their academic as well as professional careers. Students are taught to have an understanding of the branches of knowledge that concern human beings and their culture, so they can lead their fuller lives. The humanities are the study of "things pertaining to mankind." Students will be introduced to language and literature, the visual arts, the performing arts, music, philosophy, ethics, politics, and religion. These issue areas are recurring themes which concern human beings contemplating their place in the universe. These themes are approached historically in the context of western and other cultures, and in tolerance and sympathy for competing points of view.

The Department also houses the Child Development Program. The Program is designed to prepare childcare professionals who wish to pursue careers in public schools, child care programs, Head Start programs, and community or corporate based education settings. Students develop skills to curriculum design, instructional strategies, observation and assessment, communication, collaboration, responding to diverse learning styles, classroom management, and working with families and communities. Emphasis is placed on a commitment to equity in a multicultural and multiracial society, working in partnership with families, fully integrating children with special needs into the learning environment, and collaboration with community members and agencies.

Within the context of multi-disciplines and diversity, through an emphasis on students' ability to analyze information, come up with creative ideas, and put a practical plan into action, students are encouraged to be active agents of social change. Southeastern University is the ideal atmosphere for such a pursuit, for it sits in the midst of Washington, DC, where the last of the superpower has its seat.
