FACULTY & STAFF MEMORANDUM Current Memorandum Listing:
MEMORANDUM -New Faculty Advising Model
This fall, Southeastern University will be adopting the faculty advising model for graduate students. This model was adopted for the following reasons:
Professor Bertie Bryant rejoined the liberal studies department and Dr. Kassu Gebremariam and Professor Emilia Butu have moved to full- time faculty positions as well. This brings the current full- time faculty load to seven. Additionally, the university plans to hire an additional eight (8) faculty members over the next eighteen (18) months to ensure that each discipline with more than two program levels will have a dedicated full- time faculty member. Interviews are nearly complete for the chairs of all three academic departments and the new full- time faculty expected to be hired in fall 2008. Training for advising will occur for all full-time faculty members in December to facilitate their advisement of graduate students for the Winter 2009 term. In the event that a full-time faculty member has not been hired in a particular discipline, those graduate students will continue to be advised by the office of academic advising. The following full-time professors will be advising students in their discipline, beginning in Winter 2009: Dr. Peter Smith - MBA in Business Management students As more faculty are hired, this list will be updated and posted online, at the registrar’s office, in academic advising, and at the front desk. For questions, please contact me at tbrooks@seu.edu. Back to TopMEMORANDUM -September 30, 2008 Mandatory Training on Course Level Outcomes
This successful training was well received by faculty from all three academic departments. On the agenda was the creation of course level outcomes, aligned with the new program level outcomes adopted this summer, a review of research papers from online and on campus courses for comparison, and the development of discipline- specific rubrics. Program level outcomes were reviewed once again by all faculty in attendance before course level outcomes were discussed. Since all syllabi are required to list the corresponding program level outcomes and identify the course level outcomes that relate to them, students will have an increased understanding of the role that particular courses play in their educational development. They will also have a better understanding of the rigor that is required of them in their program. Professor Emilia Butu is currently conducting a comparison of online and on campus courses for the purpose of examining their rigor and quality. Information systems management and business management courses were the first to be analyzed and faculty in attendance reviewed final research papers (and scored using a common rubric) for ECON 501 and MGMT 503 in furtherance of that effort. All results will be compiled in Professor Butu’s report. Professors Lenford Smith and Dr. Jonas Okafor developed the first of many rubrics to assess knowledge and understanding of accounting. Doctors Michael Simms and Daniel Akunwafor developed rubrics for public budgeting and directed research, while Professors Kinnard Wright, Navarro Pulley and Jerry Johnson worked on nonprofit management, criminal justice and finance rubrics. It was a very productive session and those rubrics will be finalized and sent to Professor Bertie Bryant, the Academic Assessment Coordinator for review prior to implementation. Lastly, program level outcomes were mapped to the existing courses in the major core of the public administration, criminal justice and accounting programs. More work will be done on this effort over the following weeks so that all academic programs will be mapped. This assists the chairs in evaluating courses for their relevancy. This was another successful training for faculty at Southeastern University. For more information, contact me at tbrooks@seu.edu. Back to TopMEMORANDUM -September 09, 2008 Rubrics 101 Training
This training was led by Professor Bertie Bryant, who was recently appointed to the new position of Academic Assessment Coordinator. It was attended by faculty members from all three departments. Professor Bryant handed out copies of the rubrics, a sample rubric, and instructions on implementing them in the classroom. The training covered all five of the rubrics being implemented to assess student learning of the following foundational skills in the core curriculum:
All of these skills are introduced in the core curriculum and reinforced throughout the academic career of students at Southeastern, faculty should use at least one to assess student learning in each course. You are also welcome to create discipline- specific rubrics for your use, though they should be coordinated with the Academic Assessment Coordinator and approved by the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs prior to implementation. Completed rubrics should be delivered to the Academic Assessment Coordinator throughout the term as appropriate. A copy of the instruction packet, along with the rubrics themselves, are located on www.southeastern.edu under the faculty section. In addition to the rubrics for foundational skills (found under the heading “Assessment Rubrics”), there are also rubrics for conducting portfolio, case analysis, and decision making assessments. Any questions should be forwarded to either Professor Bertie Bryant at bbryant@seu.edu or myself at tbrooks@seu.edu. MEMORANDUM -Discontinued Academic Programs
List of Discontinued Academic Program has been finalized as of October 3rd, 2008. For further details, Click here MEMORANDUM - Updates to Syllabi
This memo serves to remind all faculty members that syllabi are due on the first day of classes to all students. Since we are currently recruiting for new department heads, copies of all syllabi should be sent to my office and posted with the library. With the exception of a small number of courses that are being reassigned due to enrollment, all faculty are aware of the classes that they are assigned to teach. If you do not have the text, and it is normally provided by the academic department, then please arrange to pick it up within the next five days. If it is not normally provided by the department, you are responsible for having it on the first day of classes. Please note that all courses should begin instruction on the first day of courses and that the textbook used is the one on the approved booklist. No other textbooks should be used for the class. If students do not begin the term with their books, please refer them to the university website for further instructions. I am attaching copies of the program level outcomes for all academic programs at Southeastern so that you can insert them on your syllabus. You should take this opportunity to review your course goals and outcomes to ensure that they feed the outcomes for your program. If not, please make adjustments to your syllabus. I am also attaching copies of the rubrics that we are using to assess our courses. All professors should use at least one rubric to asses each course (and every student in your course) this fall. You may also develop your own discipline- specific rubric, with the approval of your department chair or myself. Copies of these materials will also be posted on the university website under the faculty section for your continued use and review. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email at tbrooks@seu.edu. Thank you Attachments:
MEMORANDUM - MSCHE PREPARATION
Please be advised that, due to the participation needed to prepare and complete the November 01, 2008 report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, all staff members and FT faculty are expected to be present on campus between October 15, 2008 and November 15, 2008. With few exceptions, no leave will be granted for staff or faculty during this period, and very little leave will be approved prior to October 15th. This MSCHE report is vital to the continued operation of the university as an MSCHE accredited institution. As you are all aware, the small team visit will follow shortly on November 12, 2008 thru November 14, 2008. There will be a series of activities to prepare us for that visit and they will require the full participation of all full time staff and faculty. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Back to TopMEMORANDUM - ADJUNCT AND FULL TIME FACULTY LOADS
This memo serves to inform all faculty of the mandatory enforcement of the teaching load policy. As you may remember, last month I sent all of you an email notifying you that the adjunct faculty load was increased for adjunct faculty members from two (2) to three (3) per term and that full time faculty were increased from four (4) to five (5) per term. Unfortunately, this will not be the case. The full time faculty voted upon this matter and it was decided to leave the faculty loads the same. This means that adjunct faculty members will only be allowed to teach two (2) courses per term at all times. This will be strictly enforced as it is one of the major things we were cited for under Standard 10 of the MSCHE Characteristics of Excellence. Many of you were signed up for three courses and you will see that the new schedule has taken your loads back to two. Your departments will send you their updated schedules for Fall 2008. In the event that a course that you are assigned to fails to make the minimum number of students to move forward, every effort will be made to reassign you to another course (most likely one that you had previously chosen) in exchange. That will be communicated to you via email. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email at tbrooks@seu.edu or via phone at (202) 478-8216. Thank you for your cooperation. Back to Top |
