Biography

In 2007, Dr. Peter Althouse came to Southeastern University from Toronto, Canada, where he was employed as a high school educator, adjunct professor in Systematic Theology for Tyndale University College and Seminary, and occasional instructor for Wycliffe College and Master's College and Seminary.

Dr. Althouse is a firm believer in research-based teaching, a teaching ethic that has benefitted both his undergraduate and graduate students, and he is currently involved in a number of research projects on both Pentecostalism in Canada and Prayer in the Charismatic Renewal Movement (funded by Templeton). His research interests include Eschatology, Pneumatology, the theologies of Jurgen Moltmann and Karl Barth, and Pentecostal studies. His PhD dissertation was published as Spirit of the Last Days: Pentecostal Eschatology in Conversation with Jurgen Moltmann (T & T Clark). He has recently co-edited two new volumes, Winds from the North: Canadian Contributions to Early Pentecostalism (Brill) and Perspectives in Pentecostal Eschatologies: World without End (Pickwick), in addition to his regular contribution of book chapters and journal articles to the field.

In his autobiography, Jurgen Moltmann indentified Dr. Althouse as one of "the younger theologians of the Pentecostal movement" who envisions a dynamic eschatology "according to which the gifts and energies of the Holy Spirit which can be experienced here and now are 'the powers of the future world' (Heb. 6.3)." Dr. Althouse is especially interested in developing a Pentecostal theology that is both faithful to the heart of the movement and critically engaged with theologies from other Christian traditions.

Dr. Althouse teaches the following courses at Southeastern: Systematic Theology I and II, Introduction to Philosophy, Survey of Church History, Survey of Christian Theology, and Pentecostal Theology. He also teaches on Pentecostal ecclesiology at the graduate level. Besides his areas of interest listed above, Dr. Althouse's research interests also include the integration of theology, the church, and education.
