Before joining the Southeastern faculty in spring 2010, Dr. Murray Dempster served for 40 years at Vanguard University of Southern California in Costa Mesa, California, a sister Assemblies of God school to Southeastern. At Vanguard he served as Professor of Social Ethics, as well as in a variety of administrative roles, including Provost and Chief Academic Officer for five years, President for eight years, and Chancellor for one year.
Dr. Dempster is the author/editor of three books and over 15 journal articles. His anthology with Dr. Byron Klaus and Dr. Doug Petersen, The Globalization of Pentecostalism: A Religion Made to Travel, was selected by the editors of the International Bulletin of Missionary Research (IBMR) as one of the most significant books in the field of missions studies in 1999. He has presented lectures at various colleges in the United States and Canada and numerous papers at conferences and workshops in the US, Europe, and Central America. He has served as the North American Editor of Transformation: An International Evangelical Dialogue on Mission and Ethics and edited two full issues that focused on Pentecostal social concern in a global context. Dr. Dempster served as the President of the Society for Pentecostal Studies in 1991 and as the editor of PNEUMA: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies from 1993-2000.
Dr. Dempster has served on pastoral staffs in Edmonton, Canada, and Long Beach, California, and he has worked as the Senior Pastor at First Assembly of God in Fullerton, California. He completed a Ministerial Diploma at Canadian Northwest Bible Institute in Edmonton, a BA in Biblical Studies at Southern California College, and an MA and a PhD in Social Ethics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God.
At Southeastern, Dr. Dempster teaches Principles of Ethics, for undergraduates, and Pentecostal Theology for the graduate program.
His research interests are global Pentecostalism and the interaction of Christianity and social ethics.
