Hands-on training through Southeastern’s Department of Communications will equip you for inspired, professional, and responsible service in broadcasting, journalism, public relations, graphic design, theatre, and film production. At Southeastern, broadcasting majors gain experience using state-of-the-art equipment starting as a freshman, and RAW TV gives them a taste of what it’s like to produce a nationally televised talk show. Our vibrant Christian community supplies journalism / public relations majors with endless story ideas for our campus newspaper, which is also an outlet for graphic design students to practice fashioning a professional publication. Our plays and musicals provide theatre majors with a regular stage where they can hone their craft in the spotlight or behind the scenes. And our film majors can screen their films at our annual 180 Film Festival.

Broadcasting

Helping students to gain invaluable hands-on experience is at the heart of Southeastern’s broadcasting program. Beginning their freshman year, our students gain hundreds of hours of training in using state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. They learn how to operate cameras and editing equipment, as well as how to manage productions, write scripts, and more. They also have the unique opportunity to participate in the production of RAW TV, our nationally televised talk show.

Graphic Design

Southeastern’s graphic design program gives students the tools and knowledge to engage culture through stunning and compelling visual communications. Students learn to use programs such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, as well as how to code websites, write for social media, and produce professional photographs. Opportunities for hands-on experience include creating the campus newspaper and other promotional materials, participating in competitive internships, and more.

Theatre

Southeastern’s theatre program offers students a Christian environment in which to practice and perfect their craft. Each year, the department produces multiple high-quality shows from various genres and time periods. Through these productions, our dedicated students take the tools and concepts learned in class and actually put them into practice, whether that means performing the lead role, helping to design the set, giving stage directions to the actors, and more. Students can also join our improv comedy troupe, Unpland Improv, and participate in the many theatre productions happening each year within the community.

Film Production

Southeastern’s film production program is all about mastering the art of storytelling. Students delve into screenwriting, directing, and cinematography, including how to use high-definition cameras and how to edit the footage using the latest technologies. They’ll create original productions to enter into our annual 180 Film Festival, where they can win awards in categories ranging from directing to acting. In the students’ final semesters, they’ll travel to California where they’ll study at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center alongside Hollywood veterans and other aspiring filmmakers.
