SEU Athletics Keep Fueling the Fire

Each year our Fire Athletics teams really bring their game … both on the field and in the classroom.

“I am proud of the discipline shown by our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics, Drew Watson. “We had another year of success athletically and academically.”

Here are just a few of the highlights from this past school year.

Quick Stats

The Fire had another impressive year in 2016–17. Check out these amazing achievements.

  • 8 NAIA Champions of Character awards
  • 63 Academic All-Conference
  • 13 All-American and Academic All-American Honors
  • 5 Conference Championships
  • 51 All-Conference Team Students
  • 10 National Rankings in the Top 25

Strength in…

…. Academics

All of our teams strive for academic excellence. The recognition for the academic team in 2016-17 with the highest GPA is the women’s Fire Tennis team at 3.599!

… Leadership

Director of Athletics, Drew Watson, was named among the Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for 2016–17, to add to his list of impressive awards and achievements since coming to SEU in 2011.

… Numbers

Tracking every stat, score and achievement of our Fire Athletics teams may seem daunting but our own Donnie Smith is more than up to the task. Smith was recognized by his peers as the 2017 Sports Information Director of the Year by The Sun Conference.

… Diversity

While the Fire welcome athletes from all over the USA, we also welcome international athletes such as the nine student-athletes from Brazil that attended SEU during the 2016–17 school year.

… Character

SEU’s student-athletes have their coaches not only as athletic coaches, but as mentors and supporters in everything they do both on and off the field.

… Community

Fire athletes regularly give back to the community, serving right in our own backyard with organizations such as Dream Center Lakeland and Parker Street Ministries. Projects include neighborhood cleanups, volunteering with children’s ministries and coaching youth sports, among many others.

Polk County All Sports Awards

Each year since 2014 SEU has received recognition in the Polk County All Sports Awards. This year’s recipients include:

  • Bailey Hooker (Fire Women’s Basketball) —Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year
  • Bill May (retired Fire Tennis coach) — Commissioner’s Award for Perseverance
  • Fire Women’s Basketball (team) — Polk County Female Collegiate Team of the Year, earned for their historic run to the NAIA Division II quarterfinals

Looking forward

“With 28 NAIA National Tournament appearances the last four years, The Fire have shown we can compete at the national level,” said Watson. “Keep a close eye on SEU in this new school year … our goal is to claim the first NAIA National Championship in school history!”
